Awarded a high commendation and 4th place.
The submission focused on creating a ‘hard edge, soft centre’ arrangement that responded to the historical and material context of Fremantle. The strong rectilinear lines of the retail and office space sharply defined the Newman Court edge bringing vibrancy and intensity while the visual and physical transparency of the ground floor encouraged a strong connection to the heart of the square beyond.
A landscaping grid formed a green ‘carpet’ that extended across the entire site and beyond its boundaries, thus maximising the extents of the public domain at ground level while providing ambient and aesthetic benefits. Civic and library spaces were divided into two ‘roundhouses’ placed in the green centre of the square, the geometry encouraging the green space to encircle and penetrate the architecture.
